Tumor Surgery Techniques

Tumors come in many forms. They can be something simple like a wart, which is considered a benign tumor or something more dangerous like a malignant tumor. If it is malignant it is cancerous. Tumor surgery for benign tumors is much easier to perform and overall will be less dangerous types of surgery. Research shows that when it comes to cancer forty percent of all cancers are treated by tumor surgery alone while fifty five percent also require some additional treatment like chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Cancer tumor surgery must be done as soon as the diagnosis has been made. It is unwise to wait when cancer tumor surgery is recommended as waiting can cause the spread of the tumor and this can be very dangerous. If the cancer is in one place, the medical term is localized, then there is a much higher cure rate.

When performing cancer tumor surgery the surgeons must be very careful not to inadvertently further spread the cancerous cells during surgery. This is done by two very specific approaches to the surgery. One such procedure is called block resection. This technique is used when removing the tumor in its entirety. It eliminates the spreading of the cells by taking the whole tumor at one time, not bits until the whole thing has been removed. The other technique is called no touch. It means that the surgeon does not physically touch the tumor. They touch only the healthy tissue. In this approach they ensure that the cancerous cells are not touched and so are not spread. These are both important surgical procedures since spreading the cells by spilling them into the bloodstream could easily spread the cancer that has just been removed. Surgeons will also clamp the blood supply in the area they are working to prevent this same spread of cancerous cells.

Surgery for tumors of any kind, but especially those that are cancerous, is a serious business and you want to be certain that you carefully follow all directions given to you by your health care provider both before and after the surgery to ensure a speedy recovery
