Reflux Surgery as a Last Choice

Defined Tag:

Gastrointestinal reflux disease commonly referred to as GERD in the medical field is simply called reflux among those who are unfortunate enough to suffer from it. This disease is suffered by nearly twenty percent of all Americans most often older people. If it cannot be corrected by changes in lifestyle or medication then reflux surgery is necessary to ease the ongoing problems cased by it. GERD is caused when stomach acid continues to rise into the esophagus. This usually happens because the necessary closure between the stomach and the esophagus relaxes too much and does not prevent the acid from traveling upwards.

The symptoms of reflux include excessive burping, constant sore throats, bad breath accompanied by a sour taste in the mouth upon awakening, excessive saliva, pain swallowing or difficulty talking first thing in the morning. If you think you have GERD you should see you health care provider. They will decide if diet changes can help you or if you require reflux surgery. Most times the health care provider will prefer to try diet changes first and if they do not help then they will likely add medication to your daily routines. They may also suggest weight loss, as excessive weight can be a factor in this problem. If none of these solutions work then it might be suggested that you consider reflux surgery. There is a danger if this problem is not fixed by reflux surgery that the acids could cause the cells to mutate and cause cancer.

The most common reflux surgery is called fundoplication. This is used to correct the problem by wrapping something around the esophagus to close or tighten the opening. Reflux surgery has come along so far that now it is done by making five minuet incisions and conducting the whole procedure through these tiny openings. Following surgery most people no longer need special diets or medications and are able to enjoy foods long denied to them.
