Questions of Recovering from Neck Surgery
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

Defined Tag:

For whatever reason someone has had neck surgery there are certain things that they should be aware of during their recovery period. The patient may be finding that it is hard to swallow. They should not be upset since that is a very common side effect. It is caused by swelling and should not last more than seven to ten days before the swelling starts to go down. It is a reaction to the use of the surgical instruments. The patient must be prepared to change the foods that they are eating during this healing time. Soft foods like fruit sauces, soups, and mashed potatoes are suggested. After neck surgery it is also a good idea to stay away from hard or chunky foods like steak, crackers or dry cereals like those that may be granola based.

Another common complaint from those who have just had neck surgery is a discomfort on either the back of the neck or between the shoulder blades. This pain is caused by the necessary devices that are used during surgery that hold the neck in place. Unfortunately it tends to stretch the ligaments out of place when the surgeon needed access to the discs that were being operated on. The side effects of this can be pain in the shoulder blades, but it usually goes no last past a week.

The other main concern after neck surgery has to do with retuning to the normal activities of daily life. People want to know when this will be possible. The suggestion after neck surgery is to not flex the neck too much for the first six to eight weeks. You can move your neck in the normal way once it becomes comfortable to do so but movements that include trying to touch the chin to the chest can put too much strain on the area operated on and is not a good idea. The patient should be able to return to work within a few days of the surgery. As well, at the same time they should begin their physiotherapy. This program of light exercise will return proper mobility to the area that has undergone the surgery.
