Indications That You May Need Carotid Surgery
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

Our carotid arteries are key to our good health. Each of us have carotid arteries that run down each side of our necks. These two arteries split into two subsections, each with their own purpose. The inner subsection carries oxygenated blood to our brains, while the outer subsection handles the blood supply to our face. When something happens to interfere with the performance of these arteries, carotid surgery may be the best option. Here are a few samples of indications that you may need to speak with your doctor about carotid surgery.

Because the blood supply between your body and the brain is a key function of the carotid arteries, anything that seems to indicate a block in that flow may be a reason for carotid surgery. If you are experiencing weakness in your arms or legs, this may be a sign of restricted blood flow. In like manner, if you experience numbness, a prickly feeling or a tingling in those same extremities, you may want to see your physician.

Other vital functions may be impacted by reduced performance of the carotid arteries and be indicators of the need for carotid surgery. Your eyes are a good example. If you seem to be experiencing a decrease in your vision in one eye or the other, there may be a problem with the blood flow. Another example would be a change in your ability to speak clearly. When blood flow to the brain is impeded your motor skills can be impacted, resulting in an inability to work your mouth and tongue in a manner that allows you to articulate.

Dizziness and fainting are also signs that you may be a candidate for carotid surgery. This is especially true of the symptoms seem to come and go, but begin to come on with increasing regularity. If this is the case, see your physician immediately.

Carotid Surgery, if performed before the blockage is complete, can make all the difference in the quality of life. For more information on this surgery, consult your family doctor.
